After two years since Apple first introduced its Watch to the world, we have a follow up called the Watch Series 2. Apple announced the new updated Apple Watch Series 2 at the Apple Event held at Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco.
By the looks the Apple Watch Series 2 still looks the same as the previous generation like same square face, same gazillion bands to choose from. But what’s new is underneath the device that is it now has a built in GPS so you don’t need to take your phone everywhere to track your movements. It’s now waterproof, so you can wear it in the shower and use it to track your swimming workouts. According to Apple it is water resistant up to 50 meters (164 feet). The Apple Watch Series 2 has a new dual-core processor chip that’s 50 percent faster and doubles the graphics performance. There’s a new, brighter display that burns with the power of 1,000 nits so that you can see what’s going on even in direct sunlight. The battery expectancy of the Apple Watch Series 2 is 18 hours which is identical to the original Apple watch.
After unveiling the Apple Watch Series 2, Apple didn’t stop there. They announced a new Apple Watch Nike+ edition Apple Watch that is designed towards runners. It features an aluminum case and a funky silicon strap that makes the watch feel like a fitness band. There are some built-in Nike running features, but for the most part it’s a normal Series 2 watch. Apple also partnered with Hermès to introduce three new premium quality leather bands designed by the French fashion house for the Apple Watch Series 2. You can use Siri to start a run with a voice command, and during that run, you’ll see distance and pace on the screen in big, bold text. For those who can’t get motivated to run regularly, Nike has included a feature called “Just Do it Sundays,” which invites runners from all over the world to run on the same day. In the same vein, the watch will ask you each day “Are we running today?” and give you a few informative lines on how long it has been since your last run and the current weather conditions in your area.
The Apple Watch Series 2 & the Nike+ version is priced at $369. The basic model will be available in aluminum and stainless steel. There’s also a slick new ceramic model, which is said to be four times harder than stainless steel. In the Hermès lineup the Single Tour band sells for $1,100, with the Double Tour hitting $1,250 & the Hermès Cuff at $1,500. Apple has bumped up the processor of the original Apple Watch with the new one that starts at $269. Preorders begin on September 9, with the watches shipping the following week. The watchOS 3 comes on September 13. The Nike+ version will be available late October this year. Like its predecessor, the Apple Watch Series 2 will be available in two sizes: 38mm and 42mm.
