Apple’s claims about its brand new watch being a hot seller are rather turning out to be true, according to reports coming in from IDC (International Data Corporation). As per IDC, Apple has risen through the ranks of wearable manufacturers and is currently placed second in the list, hot on the heels of market leader Fitbit.
And even as those who claimed that the Apple Watch would be a failure are eating their words, the company has managed to ship an extremely impressive 3.6 million units in the second quarter of 2015 alone, capturing nearly 20 percent of the wearables market in the process. In comparison, Fitbit has a market share of slightly over 24 percent with 4.4 million units shipped in Q2.
What’s more, the victory march is expeccted to continue, with analysts speculating over the fact that Apple may in fact outship Fitbit over the course of the coming few years. According to Jitesh Ubrani, Senior Research Aanalyst for IDC Mobile Device Trackers,
Apple has clearly garnered an impressive lead in this space and its dominance is expected to continue, and although Fitbit outshipped Apple, it’s worth noting that Fitbit only sells basic wearables – a category that is expected to lose share over the next few years, leaving Apple poised to become the next market leader for all wearables
It also doesn’t hurt that while the smartphone market has seen a slump, the wearable market is spiking with 18.1 million wearables sold this year as compared to 5.6 million units in the same quarter last year, a staggerring increase of 223.2 percent.
Apple is not the only one benefiting from the sales of the Apple watch though. Riding on the success of the Apple Watch, retailers are making a killing as well. The wearable has been a “smash hit” at Best Buy, with the e-retail firm — which was the first in the U.S. to carry the device outside Apple Stores — deciding to increase the number of locations from 100 to include all 1,050 by the end of September. The store has also begun selling AppleCare and has started proceedings to become an authorized service provider in 50 stores.
All in all, Best Buy is very pleased with it’s partnership with Apple and seems eager to take it to the next level. In fact, CEO Hubert Joly claimed that Apple had quite a lot to do with the company’s improved balance sheet which incidentally, has recorded a 12 percent increase in profits this year, stating that,
Demand for Apple Watch has been so strong in the stores and online.
Well, some may say that once the initial excitement surrounding the Apple Watch — which admittedly is something of a novelty — dies down, sales may decrease too. However, IDC has other ideas.
The firm noted in its report, that since Apple is currently working on iproving it’s watch OS platform, a further rise in sales may be on the cards, once Apple releases it’s watch with upgraded software. From what we know, the next version of Apple’s Watch OS may allow for native applications too.
