Facebook is on the hunt for office space in San Francisco.
A person familiar with the matter told SiliconBeat that the tech firm is looking at different locations throughout the city for a small pilot program.
And there’s one building that Facebook is considering: a 70-story tower at 181 Fremont Street that is currently under construction.
The building, which is being developed by real estate firm Jay Paul Company, is scheduled to open next year. But Facebook has not signed a lease yet, the person said, and if it did open a San Francisco office, it would be part of a pilot that would house fewer than 100 employees who work at Facebook-owned Instagram.
Silicon Beat reached out to Jay Paul Company, but the firm declined to comment.
Facebook has offices throughout the world, but its headquarters are based in Menlo Park. Last year, Menlo Park city officials approved another office expansion by the tech firm, which will add 6,550 employees and roughly 1 million square feet of office space and a 200-room hotel.
The company, though, continues to add workers every year and some commute from San Francisco to Menlo Park for work. And Facebook is competing with other tech firms for workers who have offices in San Francisco. At one point, Facebook reportedly offered its tech workers at least $10,000 to move closer to its headquarters, although it’s unclear if the program is still in place.
As of March, Facebook had 18,770 employees, according to the tech firm’s website.
