Youtube’s Dark Mode and How to Activate it

3

Youtube appears to be getting ready to release a cool new design choice for a more interesting and cinematic aspect. The feature is still a work in progress and it’s generally recommended for the complete release to avoid potential issues, but it can be accessed by clicking youtube.com/new.

The new aesthetical change comes in the form of the Dark Theme. Once you’ve signed into your account, you will be able to switch to the Dark Theme by heading over to the account menu. Afterwards, click your profile icon, usually located on the right corner.

This feature has been available before, but only via Chrome and it wasn’t the simplest way to activate it. It necessitated going through the developer tools available in Chrome. Luckily, the process is very simple now and only requires a few seconds.

Starting off, you need to make sure your Chrome version is at 57 or higher, otherwise, it will not work. Once that is done, open up Chrome and head over to your YouTube account. Next up, you will want to open up your Developer Tools, the macro for this is different depending on your system, for Windows it’s Ctrl-Shift-I while on a Mac system it’s Command-Option-I.

Afterwards, you will have to search for the Console Tab and then copy-paste the following code: ‘document.cookie=”VISITOR_INFO1_LIVE=fPQ4jCL6EiE” ‘. Hit Enter after that and you should be set. Close the dev-tools, refresh Youtube and hit your profile icon and you should see a drop-down menu where you can see the Activate Dark Mode option.

The disadvantage of this is that you have to continuously do it each time you want the Dark Theme on. This only applies to the developer-tool method, the previously stated link method should save your preference even after you’ve closed Chrome.
